MTV 'Model Maker' promises aspiring models weight loss of up to 80 pounds

As if young women aren't already blasted with images and messages about whether or not they're thin enough, MTV is sending the message to its young viewers that, in order to be beautiful, you need to lose weight with their new reality show Model Maker. The show is holding auditions around the country now for women who "appear" to be between 18 and 25 and are willing to make their dreams a reality by dropping serious amounts of weight -- at least 30 pounds, and up to 80, within just 12 weeks. Basically, a pound a day.
Weight-loss shows are certainly successful, and it's not that I'm against a show that helps young women get down to a healthy weight, whether it's because they want to model or simply because they want to be healthier. However, the tone of this show (which still hasn't been given the green light for production -- they're waiting to see how the auditions go) seems to tell girls, "You're pretty now, but you could be beautiful if you lost a lot of weight -- fast."
Does this upset you as well? Or do you think it's just another reality show?

I saw these products by a company called It Cosmetics www.itcosmetics.com on the Today Show so I thought I would try them. I TOTALLY look like I’ve lost 15 lbs instantly and I feel like I’m finally able to get that “in-shape” look I’ve been working so hard for in the gym. Just thought I’d share this GREAT find!!!

Wow, Cassie, you don't sound like some sort of corporate viral marketer or anything!
Anyway, yes, MTV should be ashamed of themselves. If you want to do a show that helps young women realize their goals of becoming models, I am sure there are better ways to do it than with a weight loss theme. But then, there are all ready shows like that.
I wish they would do a show featuring talented people who feel held back by being at an unhealthy weight. They could show these people getting healthy and realizing their artistic and professional dreams concurrently.
But I bet you can just by a cream from 'It Cosmetics' for that, too (snark intended).
