ONQI is coming!

Ever walk your grocery store's cereal aisle and wonder which box honestly offers the best nutrition? Or how about the snack lane -- should I buy the pretzels or whole-grain crackers? People read nutritional labels often, but none of the labels scream "You're buying a bunch of empty calories, put this back on the shelf!"

Enter ONQI, the Overall Nutritional Quality Index, coming to several national supermarket chains this September, then rolling out wider in 2009. A host of nutrition scientists have been working several years on ONQI, a 1 through 100 universal nutritional scoring system based on 30 different nutrient factors. Reach for an orange you score 100. An apple, 96. But if you snatch that bag of pretzels you score a dismal 11 nutrition-wise. No medal for you.

With ONQI, you'll be able to tell at a glance which products are more nutritious -- across all food categories. Now the big question, will an ONQI score on the packaging actually keep us from tossing a case of regular soda -- ONQI Score: 1 -- in the cart? Wonder what number my favorite Kashi Go Lean cereal will yield? Check out the ONQI website to learn more about this new nutritional analgorithm.
