It doesn't hurt to know how much sodium is actually in Goldfish crackers. Nutritional knowledge is a good thing.

OMG I totally agree when I was a little kid every day my mom would pack me a small baggie of fishie crackers with a sandwhich and some kind of drink... i would have kids always begging to trade me for my goldfish DONT TAKE THE GOLDFISH AWAY FROM THE KIDS! there will be a riot XD

I can't say we've never eaten any of these foods, but I can say they are NOT staples around our house. We relax our food rules when we travel, and allow the chocolate chip granola bars and Goldfish. I think they've had canned soup ONCE and wouldn't eat it. THe waffles? They begged for them in the store, then wouldn't eat them when we got home.
And we do eat Mac and Cheese more often than I'd like to admit - a box or two a week sometimes. :( But we almost never eat fast food (maybe 2x a month) so I figure if some Mac and Cheese (or "Oni," as my 2 yo calls it) is the worst food they get, I'm not going to stress tooooo much.
No Sunny D though - we'll get real juice or none at all.

But replacing a salty food with a sugary one (or a high fructose corn syrup one) ? Not sure that's the best advice...

We have always served Annie's brand Cheddar Bunnies instead of Goldfish. I don't know what their sodium count is, but they are better nutrionally. Every friend of our daughters like the bunnies better than the fish anyway. No oily aftertaste!

I love the sour cream n onion bunnies myself. I'll eat a whole box if they're not taken away from me. I have a one year old and I don't plan on denying her these snacks, but they do have serving sizes on the back. I don't think people take that into account as much as they should. (And who didn't know all that about Sunny D?)

I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure Sunny D doesnt even call itself orange juice but orange drink. There's your sign. But the worst one of all has to be Lunchables - they have some really crazy "meat" products.

Yep, everything's illegal, immoral or fattening and sometimes all three. But even my mom never tried to make me think I was going to really look forward to liver and onions when I was a kid...I told her there isn't that much ketchup in the world! LOL

as a parent we control what our children eat or do not eat, and let me tell you as a parent of a very very picky child it was a bear to get the child to eat, things could not touch, no gravy, no veggies but french cut greenbeans out of the can, and corn if i was lucky. I was happy to see him eat anything. Al the things that you point out as bad for kids are marketed to kids. We parents do not see those commericals unless we are watching early morning tv. Bet a lot of the parents are using tv as a babysitter while we get ready for theday.
My son is now 21 and he is all grown up and happy and healthy, now food can touch and have gravy. etc.

To the person who was talking about the Cheddar bunnies (Teresa I think) I happened to have a box of them on hand so I looked and the sodium count is the same. The serving sizes are fairly close. I looked at the ingredient list for goldfish cheddar and they are fairly close till you get to two ingredients. There are polyunsaturated fats and monounsaturated fats in the goldfish. This is probably where the yucky oily taste comes from. I also use the bunnies! The ingredient that I find tricky to avoid is high fructose corn syrup. Luckily they started making yogurt in the tubes that don't use it!

I'm absolutely amazed I lived to be 53 without the food police trying to make my parents feel guilty. I'm so glad I am not responsible for reading my own food labels anymore.

I agree! I'm friggin' sick & tired of these health-freak food police who make a good living trying to protect me from myself! Gimme a big fat double bacon cheeseburger with fries, if I die from this "bad" food, I'll go out with a smile on my face, and a grease stain on my shirt!

I don't see how graham crackers are a good substitute for goldfish. They satisfy two totally different parts of the palate. If I want goldfish, it means I want something salty. Maybe lightly-salted peanuts would be a better substitute?
