The 5: Be prepared for summer scrapes and bruises

Summertime can be a boatload of fun, but too much enjoyment can sometimes lead to scrapes, bumps, bruises, sprains, and even splinters. That's why it's good to have your medicine cabinet stocked with the essentials.

To help keep everyone as prepared as a Boy Scout, Maximum Fitness magazine suggests some of these Medicine Cabinet Must-Haves:

1. Bandages and Triple-Antibiotic Ointment. You never know when junior might fall during a backyard barbecue and scrape his knee. Put some Neosporin on that cut, cover it in a band-aid and the little guy will be up and running again in no time.

2. Acetaminophen. For pain relief with the fewest side effects, pop one or two of these (check the suggested dosage). This should help keep you from whining for at least an hour or so about the ankle you sprained during that game of touch football.

3. Hydrocortisone Cream. After you went traipsing through a patch of poison ivy in search of that lost Frisbee, and the itch has since grown to be unbearable, apply liberally to the affected area.

4. Tweezers. "Hey, everybody ... watch this," you yell, as your fifth beer convinces you that you can still do a cartwheel. In addition to falling ass-over-teakettle, you also dig a good size splinter into your hand from the deck -- reminding you of two things: 1) You haven't done a cartwheel in over twelve years, and 2) That doing a drunken cartwheel on the grass probably would have been a much better idea. To now remove that sucker from your hand, sterilize the tweezers with rubbing alcohol (and no, beer will not work) and then get plucking.

5. Stomach Fixes. The MaxFit article suggests Lomotil for diarrhea, Miralax for constipation or even Mylanta (an antacid) to help do the trick.

If you have any suggestions for medicine cabinet must-haves, please feel free to add them in the comments section below.
