Fitz's Fit Family Disney Vacation: Day 2
As I've been leading you through the paces of enjoying the best Walt Disney World has to offer, without trashing your health and fitness habits, this is one of the easiest days to master. On our second day of vacation we headed to the holy land of wholesome family fun, The Magic Kingdom. Ahhh yes! This is the place where children squeal, Mommies well up with tears of joy on a regular basis, and Daddies shout like kids themselves on the roller coasters. It's also a place where every last visitor is likely to do a ton of physical work. In fact ... read on and you'll learn exactly how many calories we burned during this day. It's insane!
So! Our day consisted of pushing the kids in the double stroller, then watching the castle show. Did I mention each of my children weigh almost 40 pounds? Then we pushed the kids in the double stroller some more, and rode some rides in Fantasyland. In fact, before we even stopped for lunch, we pushed the double stroller again and rode rides in: Fantasyland, Tommorowland, back to Fantastyland, Mickey's Toontown Fair, Adventureland, back to Tommorowland and finally landed back in Adventureland for lunch. Then we ran circles in the water squirters at both Ariel's Grotto and Pooh's Corner to cool off for about an hour. The latter half of the day resembled the first half, except it seemed even busier.
Our food choices that day included: grilled chicken and veggie salads for the adults, grilled chicken with fruit for the kids, a giant soft pretzel, apples, bananas, 4,000 bottles of water, a few Diet Cokes, and three Mickey Mouse Pops (total shared between the four of us). Not one ounce of fried food entered our mouths (as usual), and instead we filled ourselves up with enough laughs, screams, oohs and ahhs to fill up an entire year. Capping the night off with the Spectromagic Parade and Fireworks sent our children off into lala-land before we even came close to the park exit.
The day was ridiculously fun, and thanks to the phenomenal fitness tool the BodyBugg by Apex, we were able to find out exactly how many calories my husband and I burned throughout the day. Just to put this number in perspective, on an average day while I do things like work (teaching fitness), play with the kids, and workout, I burn an average of 1,900 calories. My husband, who works out like a fiend and has a busy job in law enforcement, burns about 2,600. During this one funtastic vacation day at the Magic Kingdom -- where we participated in zero minutes of deliberate exercise -- I burned 2,519 calories and Rob burned 3,642! That's more calories than either of us would burn if we worked out for more than four hours!
So! If you've always considered vacation to be a blow-your-diet, gain-10-pounds event, it's time to get with the program. Times are changing, and Disney is leading the way!
If you know of another healthy vacation location, let me know!

Fitz,
Ive been reading up on your Disney adventure, and looking at the photos posted, and it really makes me chest swell at just the thought of undertaking such an adventure. My husband and I are planning for kids within the next year or two, and its stories like these that make me so excited to be a parent.
The fitness/food side of Disney is a new idea for me that I'm really looking forward to. A question ~ What hotel are you staying at? Do they have similar good-for-you dishes available (room service dishes, even??). Thanks so much for continuing to inspire me to stay healthy, and to help me look forward to our trips to Disneyland in the years to come :)

I would bet any of the Disney hotels on-property have the same healthy choices - just a guess :)

They do. The resort dining facilities are packed with fruit, veggies, yogurt, healthy cereals, snack bars, Bottled water and low fat milk are a plenty. You'll also find many healthy hot options like grilled chicken, veggie lasagne, fish, salads an more. Disney offers ZERO excuses for its guests who want to eat healthy.....to not be able to. It's absolutely wonderful. Fitz
