The American College of Sports Medicine has tallied the statistics to
rank 15 of America's largest metropolitan cities. Which cities were deemed the fittest? Which fell at the bottom, and why?
The goal of the fitness index is to give a quick glimpse of the health status of America's metropolitan areas. Ultimately the ACSM hopes to help cities achieve a higher level of physical activity and healthy eating habits. The reports about each city include strategies for improvement. The top five cities were:
- San Francisco, CA
- Seattle, WA
- Boston, MA
- Washington D.C.
- Atlanta, GA

My wife and I just got back from a week's vacation in San Francisco last Saturday. I was surprised, I saw very few obese people in San Francisco, where there are quite a few here in Urbana, IL. Using a car in San Fransisco must be a painful affair - there are few parking spots and for the most part they're always taken. We had to walk or use public transportation to tour the place, and walking that city sure was a workout! Consider that San Fran is extremely hilly... I definitely went to sleep easy each night we were there.
A picture of Fisherman's Wharf is a bit deceiving though, that's like the least healthy place there. They sell lots of junk food there, as its a "tourist" destination.

Color me jealous, Drewboy. I've always wanted to go to San Francisco and have yet to visit.
Good point about the Fisherman's Wharf photo. I wanted a photo that was iconic and recognizable (and different than the bridge because I used that in the gallery).

Maggie one thing that let me down, was that I had heard so much about green initiatives in San Francisco, but once I got out there it was pretty hard to see. The entire city is paved over like a bit city would be, which is kind of disappointing to me. Living in Urbana Illinois, I'm used to tons of trees everywhere, as Urbana is recognized as a "Tree City USA" community.
