Guess how many pounds of bugs you eat each year!

Oh man. This is one of those statistics that makes you either swear off eating all together or throw your hands up in the air in disgust. I mean seriously. Who is the guy with the weird job which allows him to research these odd little details? I'd hate to be his wife, as he comes home each night with all the yucky tidbits in life that I really never want to know.
I learned about my bug consumption while flipping through the June 2008 edition of Women's Health magazine. Seems more the type of scoop you'd find in Maxim, but no ... it was my beloved Women's Health that broke the news.
Since you haven't stopped reading this by now, I'm guessing you'd like me to tell you the wretched truth. The average person inadvertently consumes almost two pounds of bugs each year. Ick! Ew! Yuck! You may not realize how much that actually is. Your loving online Fitzness trainer (me) is sweet enough to share the horrid details with you. Imagine the size of a two pound dumbbell. Dumbbells are dense, meaning they compact a lot of weight in to just a small bit of space. Bugs are not dense. In fact they are pretty light. How many bugs would it actually take to tip the scale for two whole pounds? Lots and lots and lots. So ... maybe I just gave you a better reason to tighten up on your diet. Maybe you're just laughing your butt off. I'm on the verge of both.

Well, they are probably good for us, but really? Two pounds? How the heck does that happen? Are they talking about tiny little guys that go undetected into our salad, or what???

I'm gonna call BS on this statistic. 2 Lbs?
That's roughly .087 OZ, or 2.5 grams per day!!!!
No way.

Fitz,
I've heard we swallow several spiders a year in our sleep. Love the gallery commentary!

I've eaten bugs/insects when camping. It's no big deal, get over it. In fact some, like grasshoppers, taste very good when roasted.

So that's why I can't get those stubborn 10 pounds off! I'm forgetting to log in the bug calories in my journal.

Hysterical Emma! And yes Tim, since we eat pounds of bugs without even knowing it.......I guess we have no choice but to "get over it". Having said that.....I'll leave the wilderness meals to you and Bear Grylls. Fitz!
OH! And Bev.......I wanted to thank you for the nightmare I'll be having tonight in advance! :)

The spider in your sleep statistic is nonsense, it was made up to show that people would believe anything they read.

Yeah, here's another:

Ironically, I was at physical therapy today and all of the sudden had a hard "tickle" in my throat, and couldn't stop coughing. My therapist said " are you swallowing up all the bugs in here?" - ACK!
And I had a chance to study a 2lb. dumbbell while there. I say no way, no chance.
Do you have a link to the article and/or the source of this info?
Thanks!
