Workplace Fitness: Stay strong and healthy while on the road

A good percentage of today's career opportunities involve at least some traveling, and whether it's required or voluntary, fun or a drag, close to home or across the world, if it involves overnight stays and hotel rooms, it's most likely going to have an impact on your exercise schedule. And that impact, for most business travelers, is a bad one. How many of the hotels that you've stayed in have had nice workout facilities with enough equipment, and enough of the right equipment for you to keep your home routine going seamlessly? For me, just being in a different place with a different atmosphere is enough to make jumping on the treadmill for my usual routine hard.

So my advice is to not even try to keep your regular routine going while you're away -- instead, come up with a separate and different "travel workout" that you do while on the road. And this one that I found over at Best Life magazine is a great strength training workout that needs no equipment -- perfect! Here are some of the basics that Best Life suggests, plus a few other classic moves you just can't go wrong with:

Push-Ups The traditional push up (either on the feet or the easier version of resting on the knees instead) is a great way to burn calories, build upper body strength, and tone your arms for swimsuit season. How to do a push-up

Squats Build lower body strength and burn major calories by activating some of the biggest muscles in your body with squats. How to do a squat

Sit-Ups Strengthen your core and work on having beautiful beach-ready abs by doing a few sit-ups in your hotel room before you get started on your day. How to do a sit-up

Chair Dips
Great for toning arms and only needing a chair (which all hotels and offices have), chair dips are simple but effective at toning your triceps -- an all-too-often neglected set of muscles. How to do a chair dip

Leg Raises Whether you do one leg at a time or both at once, leg raises burn calories and strengthen your lower back and abdominal muscles while trimming your waist and thighs. How to do a leg raise
