Americans are being hit in the wallet at almost every turn these days. Between exorbitant gas prices and rising food costs, it's becoming increasingly difficult to eat healthy. While most people would much rather purchase lean meat and poultry, for example, the disparity in pricing between such foods and highly-processed foods makes the decision based more on personal finances than on personal health.
Fortunately, there are some healthy foods that won't break the proverbial bank. WebMD recently listed ten of them, in fact, in an article titled 10 Healthy Foods for Under a Dollar. Check 'em out!!
1 - Apples
2 - Banana
3 - Baby Carrots
4 - Canned Beans
5 - Canned Tomatoes
6 - Oranges
7 - Pears
8 - Lentils
9 - Pearl Barley
10 - Plain Yogurt

Crystal,
I thought the very same thing when I first read the WebMD article. I said to myself, "What are these people talking about...bananas are, like, 79 cents a pound. How, then, could a bunch of them cost less than a buck?" Upon closer examination of the article, however, I realized that bananas, apples, and many other items listed were based on serving size. So, a single serving of, say, an apple is one individual apple, which does cost less than a dollar.
Thanks for the comment, by the way!!

When you consider that a lot of these things can be grown in a home garden - carrots, beans and tomatoes for sure, and depending on where you live, bananas, oranges or apples - or made at home for less than you can buy them at the store (yogurt), you can definitely eat well on a limited budget!
