FitSpirit: Be the change
FitSpirit explores the mind-body connection and the intangible benefits we gain from our efforts to stay physically fit.'We must be the change we wish to see in the world'
-Mahatma Ghandi
I received a call from a friend yesterday, asking me if I wanted to head to our local watering hole for chicken wings and pints of beer. "Sorry, can't," was my reply. "I have a date with the gym." She said, with a laugh, "Are you trying to make me feel guilty? Cause I kind of do." The thing is, I wasn't trying to make her feel badly for doing something unhealthy by doing the opposite -- I was just being honest about my plans.
But I can see why it might seem otherwise. And who wants a self-righteous friend who rubs it in your face that she is healthier than you? Certainly not me. Even so, if my friend thinks twice about chowing down on one of the most unhealthy dishes in the world, then maybe I've done something good. What do you think?
The truth is, not all of us will make a sweeping, revolutionary change in the world. But we can make changes in our own small little corners of the world. And the first step? Change yourself. Be the change you want to be. Lead by example, and it will make a difference in the lives of people around you. Then you can think about doing more to have an impact on the world. For me, being the change means making each of my decisions the healthiest one I can for myself -- most of the time, anyway. What about you?
