Forget installing a monster play set in your back yard. Children play longer and harder when given balls, jump ropes, and hula hoops, according to University of North Carolina researchers. Stationary objects just don't encourage as much physical activity. But a fit-kid kit will.

Fitness magazine recommends filling a big Rubbermaid utility tub with colorful, portable playthings, like these:
