FitGadgets: JumpSnap

Categories: Fitness

Do you have trouble jumping rope? You won't with the JumpSnap, which is something we've talked about here at That's Fit once before, but it warrants another turn.

Jumping rope is, by all accounts, an excellent workout. And, there are loads of reasons to do it -- jump ropes aren't necessarily all that expensive, you don't need a partner, and it doesn't require much room.

However, as I found when I coached volleyball and asked my players to jump rope, there is one serious problem with it -- some people are really, truly bad at it. Honestly, I had a team of 12 girls, all of whom were in great shape and very athletic, but about half of them had real trouble jumping rope at a decent pace, which totally shocked me.

Anyway, I've since come across the JumpSnap, which is a ropeless jump rope. It claims to burn more calories than riding a bike, using a stair climber, or running, and can be used pretty much everywhere and by everyone. It comes with workout programs to help you set and meet goals, and it isn't terribly expensive with individual packages starting at $59.95.

This looks like a great product for folks who don't have space to jump rope or for those who have trouble with the footwork and don't have the patience to learn it. Additionally, it looks like it would be very easy to modify your intensity level, so exercisers of all levels could benefit.

However, while I haven't had the opportunity to use the product, I do have a couple of reservations, mainly pertaining to athletes or people who are seriously training. Because you don't have to actually jump over a rope, your feet don't have to jump the same as they would with a regular jump rope. And, even if you are able to make yourself jump high enough, you're still not getting the footwork training a regular jump rope offers, and for athletes looking to improve their agility and quickness, this could really be a downer.
