Healthy reality TV: Biggest Loser

Posted on Apr 8th 2008 10:49PM by Bev Sklar

I don't watch much television anymore, life's just too busy. But one show I try not to miss is NBC's Biggest Loser. You know, the reality show where seriously obese contestants get in shape, learn how to eat and vote each other off while living for weeks on a luxurious ranch with all the healthy fixins' -- personal trainers, motivational challenges and no toilets to clean.

Watching Biggest Loser has proven the healthiest television viewing ever for me. Loyal to the cause, I never eat junk food while glued to the show. I also prefer to tune in at the gym for the fitness camaraderie and to avoid feeling like a viewer-slug. Like tonight -- I didn't have time to get to the gym for the episode, so I skipped the show's first 20 minutes, ran a couple miles outside, then plopped in front of the tv for my ab crunches, planks, upper body work and stretches. I never behaved like this when I used to watch Survivor -- I usually felt hungry as contestants gnawed coconuts.

Tune in next Tuesday to see the Live Finale and crowning of this season's Biggest Loser. I'm rooting for Ali, she's lost the most weight of any woman ever on the series. The contest is between Ali, Kelly and the winner of an audience poll for the third slot -- either Mark or Roger. Both guys have lost around 40 percent of their body weight -- which guy joins the ladies to compete for the $250,000 prize is in the hands of a worldwide internet vote. Click here to weigh in!
