Health tips from toddlers

Every day I learn something new from my son. He's so much better at forgiving and forgetting, he throws himself into all his activities with his whole heart, and the second he meets someone new he considers them his friend. They're beautiful lessons to learn and I'm constantly reminded that while I'm the parent and it's my role to teach him, it's also my role to put my jaded adult heart aside and learn from him, too. When it comes to physical activity we could all take a tip from our kids. Dietblog has a list of 5 things we can learn from toddlers:
- They stay on the move. Toddlers wake up and don't slow down until it's time to go to sleep. They play, play, and play some more. Just the simple act of being in motion more can make an impact on adults' weight control and energy level. If you find you're stuck behind a desk all day, make an extra effort to move a bit more -- by a small stepper for use underneath your desk, get up and walk around the office, stand up and stretch, and make some extra trips up and down the stairs.
- They stop eating when they're full. Unless mom and dad are forcing them, toddlers aren't usually members of the "clean your plate" club. Take small portions to start with and eat slowly, savoring your food and giving your body a chance to feel full. When you're satisfied... stop eating.
- They love to be naked. How many toddlers have you known that rip off their clothes right after their parent dresses them? While I wouldn't advise walking around naked, complete comfort with your body is something to strive for. We're all too hard on ourselves and critical of every perceived flaw. It's time to appreciate what our bodies do for us, aim for being healthy, and forget about the extra wrinkles, bumps, and sags.
- They're flexible. Bringing their toes up to their head or bending down to crawl through a tight space is no big deal for a toddler -- they do it every day. Flexibility exercises can do wonders for your endurance, strength, and general tone. Take a yoga class or take a few minutes to stretch each day. (Remember, don't stretch a cold muscle -- be sure to warm up first.)
- They catch their zzzz's. Toddlers have a bed time and their tired parents make sure they stick to it. Adults should be so careful with their own sleep habits. While everyone's sleep needs vary, most adults require 7-8 hours a night.
