FitBeauty: Spring Styles to Suit Your Body
Every season brings with it new trends and styles, and changing up your wardrobe is a great way to welcome in the new season. However, one thing I find myself telling people again and again is that no matter how hot a trend is, if it doesn't work for you, don't spend your money on it.And so, I'm here to walk you through some of this season's trends but also tell you how women of different shapes and sizes might want to incorporate those into their wardrobes.
Trend: One shoulder dresses. This trend is fantastic because it works for most body types. Many of the styles are in fabrics and cuts that float away from the body, keeping you cool and hiding any little bulges. And, while this is fantastic, there is one drawback -- if you're quite busty, the material is going to float right off the girls and not give you any definition at all. If you have more of an hourglass figure, opt for something that cuts a little closer to the body, or go Grecian with a wrap style that accentuates your curves.
Trend: Wide leg pants. Wider pants are more flattering on most figures that tight, tapered pants, so I'm happy to see this regain popularity. The key here is fit -- the fact that it's a wide leg doesn't mean that you're wearing big, baggy pants. They should fit properly (not saggy, but not pulling) in the butt, hip, and thigh area, and then skim over the rest of your thigh into a wide leg. Also, keep an eye on the length -- it's not stylish to have your hem dragging in the mud. It should skim the top of your foot.
Trend: Leggings and tunics. This one is tough. Leggings can be really unforgiving. The key here is to make sure that you don't mistake leggings for pants -- they are thicker than tights, but they still should be worn with something long enough to cover the naughty bits. Because, let's just face it -- even Lindsay Lohan isn't pulling it off. Women with large hips and thighs will really have trouble with this look -- I don't recommend it. However, if you're dying to get on board, try pairing them with a longer, flowing top or a skirt, like these celebrities have done. Also, remember throwing on a pair of heels or wedges will elongate your leg.
Trend: Bright colors. One of the easiest ways to update your wardrobe is through color, and this season, brighter is better -- even neons are seeing a resurgence! The hottest hue by far is yellow, but that doesn't mean you need to go out and buy butter-colored outfit. If you're not comfortable with bright colors, try incorporating some bright accessories -- a chunky green necklace, a pink and yellow scarf, or a turquoise headband can do wonders for your wardrobe.
The Figure Flatterer at iVillage is a really helpful tool for anyone trying to determine whether a type of cut works for them during any season, and a flattering fit is always more important than what trend Hollywood is currently sporting.
