Indoor triathlons

Posted on Mar 28th 2008 11:51AM by Bev Sklar

Years ago I completed my one and only triathlon. It was a half mile swim (sorta fun), a 20 mile or so bike ride (awesome) and a five mile run (exhilaratingly painful). The experience was generally positive, but not enough to draw me back. I was a bit disoriented during the swim after being face-kicked and blinded by a rising sun. I also remember feeling embarrassed as I hauled two-foot strands of lake plants from my cleavage while frantically sprinting to find my bike. A surprising reaction from this tough, tomboy, rockclimber/hiker-girl. Silly complaints aside, I think everyone should give a triathlon a try.

Yesterday Lifetime Fitness announced they're bringing triathlons indoors to 30 of their facilities nationwide. Instead of pre-set distances, performance is measured by distance covered in the pool, on the bike and the treadmill during a 60-minute timeframe. A cool twist inclusive of a variety of fitness levels. Granted, you won't be able to physically whiz past your competitors, but racing against the clock is appealing all the same. Another bonus, no cleavage-dredged algae.

The events are open to both members and non-members alike. If interested, check out this link. Turn these weeks of spring into a training ground. Enter a race this summer, plan a rigorous hiking trip, commit yourself to an event you'll need to train for -- get in the best shape of your life!
