What to wear: Beach volleyball

To start this off, let me clarify that I'm not talking about bumping around an inflatable ball with the cute boys (or girls) you saw down the beach. I'm talking about serious, score-keeping, diving into the sand volleyball, with points and rules and everything.
Whether you're opting to play in your first tournament or you're meeting up with some serious players for the first time, you want to make sure you're properly attired. In no way does that mean you need to go out and buy the same bathing suit that Kerri Walsh or Mike Lambert wear, but there are certain items that will make you a little more comfortable:

In no way does that mean you need to go out and buy the same bathing suit that Kerri Walsh or Mike Lambert wear, but there are certain items that will make you a little more comfortable:
- On top: Ladies, you need to have a bathing suit top that stays firmly in place -- you don't want anything popping out when you dive for a dig. Also, remember that you'll be jumping, so if you need a supportive top, make sure you have one. If you're really uncomfortable wearing just a bikini top, go ahead and wear a tank to cover up. Guys, you can wear a tank or tee if you want, but you're at the beach, so you're fine without a shirt.
- Down low: Ladies, please make sure your bottoms are big enough. We don't need to see your crack when you bend forward, and you don't want to have to spend every time out picking your bikini out of your netherregions. If you're uncomfortable bearing skin, go with some athletic shorts. Guys, board shorts are pretty standard, but make sure you've got them tied tight enough at your waist so you don't lose them going for a save.
- Footwear: If the sand is particularly hot, you might want to bring socks to wear. I know, the tan line sucks, but you'll be able to stand without hopping from foot to foot. Otherwise, whatever beach shoes you have are fine -- Crocs are currently sponsoring the AVP, but I still can't endorse them. They're just so ugly.
- On your head: A hat or visor, if it doesn't block your vision, is a nice way to keep the sun out of your face. At the very least, find some sport sunglasses and a bandana to keep your hair out of your face.
