Sobering views on Lasik eye surgery

Abby Ellin wrote a gut-honest article in the NY Times last week on her negative experience with Lasik eye surgery. Her parents offered her a cello or Lasik for her 40th birthday and she chose the laser. Post-surgery she now faces slightly blurry vision, seriously bothersome dry eyes, and at night, she sees halos around bright lights. Ellin definitely feels the risks were not highlighted enough upfront, but ultimately she blames herself for voluntarily choosing the procedure.
Ellin's article has attracted over 250 comments to date. After reading many of them I am convinced more than ever I will never choose Lasik. A 95.4 percent patient satisfaction rate is just not high enough for me. Ellin also discovered post-surgery that 5 to 10 percent of Lasik patients will need to have their vision fine-tuned in the future -- no small number.
If you're considering Lasik, read Ellin's article and pour through subsequent reader comments. Read studies on Lasik, talk to several doctors, do your due diligence. Just remember, Ellin thought she covered all these steps and now she's left angry and dissatisfied after losing her 20/20 vision enjoyed previously via glasses.
