Finding triathlons in your area
Categories: Healthy Events, Fitness
I recently wrote a post on why I think you should try a sprint triathlon, and I've gotten some positive responses. However, the question I keep hearing is, "How do I find out about them?"Truthfully, unless you're involved in the sport, you're probably totally unaware of these events taking place, even if they're occurring right in your own town. If you're interested in triathlon (sprint or otherwise), a great resource is the USA Triathlon event calendar. You can do an advanced search to find only triathlons (or duathlons, or an assortment of other endurance races) and get that search narrowed down to your state. You can then sort by date, event name, location, or event type to find exactly what you need.
When you find a race in your area, check the website right away. Discounts are often given for early registration or, if you're entering a race that's part of a series, you might get a discount for signing up for all races in the series.

www.active.com is another good resource for regional events.

Have you seen TRImapper.com? The site is a visual world triathlon finder with over 1400 triathlons around the world. You can find everything from sprint to iron distance races visually on a map. The site has filters, by month, race type and location. Plus the site also has triathon club around the world, so you can find a club to train with in your surrounding area.

TRImapper is always horribly outdated. The USAT site and trifind.com are the two best sources for finding a triathlon to do in your area.

Just remember, the USAT website only lists triathlons that are USAT sanctioned. There are many triathlons that are not USAT sanctioned, so it's a good idea to use both trimapper and trifind to find those races.
Dave, why is trimapper as you say "horribly outdated"? The site started with 250 races and now has over 1425 triathlons listed. This is not the place, but why don't you write the webmaster and let him know the problems with the site. You might want to write trifind as well because I see they are missing some race listings too and they have references to races that no longer exist.
