Workplace Fitness: How to keep work from taking over your life

Work is an important and necessary part of life, and although hopefully it's also fulfilling and satisfying you never hear anybody on their death bed saying "I wish I had worked more." Regrets about not spending more time with friends and family are common, but rarely does the same apply to careers. The problem is that work is such an easy thing to get caught up in, and it always seems to get top priority over things like family, friends, and hobbies because those are perceived as more flexible and always available. But are they really?

Life is all about priorities, and balancing your work life with your personal and family life is much easier if you know what those priorities are for you. If you're struggling to keep your career from taking over your life, and want to find more personal time to spend doing things other than work, try these tips from Freelance Switch:

  • No one can be productive for more than 80 hours a week. So be realistic and don't overbook your schedule or expect too much from yourself. This rule applies to all things but especially work -- don't stay late every night and expect to still be able to give your family 100% when you get home exhausted. It just doesn't work that way.
  • Dinner time is important. Make a commitment that no matter what, you and your family will always eat your evening meal together -- even if it means you have to go back to work after dinner is over or the kids are in bed.
  • Get outside. Go for a walk on your lunch break or get up early and sit outside for a few minutes with your morning coffee. It's a great way to get some fresh air, enjoy the outdoors, and even appreciate the seasons. Plus if it's really nice out it might help you get inspired for the next item on the list: exercise!
  • Get your blood pumping. Exercise can not only help you be healthier, fitter, and live longer but it can also help stimulate a happier mood and an overall more satisfying day.
I think the #1 best thing you can do to balance your work and family successfully is to simply keep making an effort and be realistic about where the "give and takes" are. Remind yourself regularly of what your top priorities are and keep making sure those happen and you'll have a much happier and more satisfying daily life!
