What to wear: Kickboxing

Categories: Fitness

Are you thinking about incorporating kickboxing into your fitness routine? Good for you! It's a blast and a serious workout. You're sure to work up a sweat, burn tons of calories, and feel great afterward (even if you are a little sore).

If you're anything like me, you want to make sure you look the part when you walk in for your first class or training session -- I don't mean that you need to have all of the authentic gear or anything, but you should know what attire and equipment is necessary for the best results. Your class or trainer will likely provide a lot of the equipment, but you still have to provide your wardrobe:

  • On top: Wear a top that won't restrict your movement. I prefer tank tops so my arms are free. Also, if you're going to be concerned about your midsection, wear a shirt you can tuck or that is long enough to hide your belly -- you'll be moving your body in some strange positions, and the last thing you want to worry about is whether your shirt is staying put.

  • On top, underneath (for the ladies): Make sure you have a supportive sports bra -- you'll need it.

  • Below the belt: I prefer to wear shorts because I get so hot and sweaty (I know, gross), but you can wear pants as long as they aren't too long for you. If they are too long and you slip on them while learning a roundhouse, your opponent won't have to lift a finger to land you on your butt. If you choose to wear shorts, keep in mind that you will be kicking your legs high, so you need to make sure that the fit is such that no naughty bits show.

  • For the feet: This you'll need to check out with your trainer. For an aerobics class at the gym, you'll want to wear sneakers, but if you're seeing a trainer and working with a heavy bag, you might be going barefoot. Get a pedi now, if you need it.

  • Hair: If you have long hair, get it out of your eyes. It's much easier to put on a headband or bandana now than it is to try to get it out of the way wearing boxing gloves.
