Workplace Fitness: What your desk says about your personality

If you work in an office you've no doubt noticed the variety of work spaces people set up for themselves when it comes to desks and cubicles. There are people with pictures everywhere, some have candy bowls everywhere, some have piles of paper everywhere, and some have nothing anywhere (gotta love those uber-organized types!). Have you ever looked around and wondered what all those different work spaces really mean about the people who created them? Or better yet, have you ever wondered what your workspace says about you?

Lots of plants
People who surround themselves with plants at work are most likely signifying that they're putting down roots. Tidy, healthy, well cared for plants are the thing to look for, though, because although many look to bring some life into the sterile office environment not all have the personality to keep them alive.

A really nice chair

The days of the boss sitting in an oversized leather clunker of a chair are on their way out, with power-seats turning more towards light, slim, and ergonomical. Someone who pays attention to what kind of seat they've got, and is willing to put some money into it, is probably either the boss, on their way to being the boss, or at the very least a boss wannabe.

Post-It notes everywhere
Post-Its are a wonderful organizational tool, but when a person is over-reliant on them and has their desk area covered in stickies it's probably a sign that they're feeling at least a little overwhelmed. The good news? It doesn't necessarily mean that they're disorganized -- a truly disorganized person wouldn't have any Post-Its at all.

Clocks, calendars, and planners
People who watch the clock and their schedules closely, and so have one or more clocks and calendars at their desk, are usually very meticulous and hardworking. This only applies, though, if they do actually use them -- lots of people buy calendars, planners, and clocks as a way to help them get organized but then fail to actually use them regularly.

Pictures
Photos of friends and family and pretty commonplace on office desks, but the message is in the details. Pictures of family that face outward to visitors might be meant as status symbols while pictures facing the worker are probably genuine reminders of loved ones and sometimes also signify guilt relating to time spent away from family. Photos that include the office owner may also be meant to tell others something, such as "I'm a great dad" or "I love to travel."

Candy dishes
People with candy dishes on their desks are generally extroverts. They like to visit with others and are looking to lure people into their space with sweets or big comfy chairs. Extroverts usually have very inviting work spaces.

Perfectly decorated

People invest more of themselves and feel more comfortable "making a space their own" when they feel secure in their job, therefore the more personalized a work space is the more secure that person is feeling.

Cleanliness
How tidy and organized a person is will overflow to their workspace, and good or bad habits in this area are hard to break. A tidy organized desk generally means a tidy and organized person works there. Unless, of course, it only looks clean because 5 minutes ago the person shoved everything into a drawer with one swoop.

Empty space
A desk that's too organized and is all but empty on top is a sign that someone is either dull and overly organized or has very little status in their company.
