Q. Hi Fitz! I am 29 year old male and I am thinking about starting a workout routine. However, I don't know where to begin. I have a treadmill and that's it. I am 5'11 and about 160lbs. I don't have a lot of muscle, have a low self esteem towards my body shape and would like to change it. Something simple I can do at home with or without the treadmill would be OK. Any suggestions? Jared

A. Sweet Jared. So sorry you're feeling down in the dumps. Hard to know exactly what is causing it all, but getting yourself in shape can certainly be a grand opportunity to increase your physical fitness, confidence and self esteem. It's proven to help people live better and longer. I can help you with your physical goals. If you feel like there may be something else adding to your low self-esteem, please don't feel shy to talk to your medical doctor or a counselor.

Having said that, it sounds like you are long and lean. What a lucky place to start! Let's get you going with a very simple routine which should get you on your way towards the athletic body you so desire. Make that treadmill your home for at least thirty minutes a day, five days a week. Jog for as long as you can, take a two minute walking break, and then repeat. Continue this jogging/walking training until you can jog for 30 minutes straight. Once you get there....increase your time, distance, speed or all three. Up to you! When you feel like you have bricks in your shoes, just walk! It's OK to have some slower days here and there.

As for building muscle, Keep It Simple Stupid, is the best policy. After you've completed your treadmill training, spend the next 30 minutes doing push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges, dips, planks and various crunches. Most of these exercises only require your own body weight. I highly recommend a pull-up bar. (Visit the front page of my web site Fitzness.com to learn how to do a variety of neat pull-ups.) Dips you can do on the floor or off the edge of any bench or step. I recommend Men's Health Magazine for some excellent how-to pull outs. Then spend some time stretching. Flexibility is vital to avoiding injuries, minimizing pain and achieving total fitness.

Jared, don't expect miracles in days. Expect to start feeling better very quickly though. Fitness is a lifestyle. The longer you stick with it, the greater your benefits will be. It's supposed to be hard. It's supposed to be challenging. All the good things in life usually are. But fitness is the one unique thing that will help you take control of your life, and earn the confidence you desperately seek. Get busy buddy and let me know how things go. You're worth it! Fitz

Q. Hey there, Fitz. I take a lot of group fitness classes at the gym and love them. Because of family issues, I've had to do more workouts at home. I like to do the things I do in my favorite classes, but don't have the same type of nonstop fast moving group fitness music. How do I get some? Janelle

A. Ahhh Janelle! The beauty of continuous music! Nothing's worse than having to pause in the middle of something great, wait for the next song to start, and then change everything up to adjust to the newer rhythm. To heck with that! Group fitness music is a blessing. Sometimes it's a bit annoying, because often the songs are 'remade' by unknowns to sound like the original artists. But, the sacrifice is justified as we groove for 45 minutes straight without interruption.

Group fitness music is a massive industry and the options are endless. I'll link you to my favorites though. Power Systems offers a great variety and my other favorite is Work This! Music, Between the two of them, you'll find yourself a bunch of awesome options. They make training tunes for every genre: rap, hip-hop, techno, country, Broadway tunes, pop, etc. It's insane. So! I'm thrilled you're pursuing your favorite training at home and hope you find some music that you love!

Punches & Kicks,

Fitz
