The morning mile keeps kids on the run

I'm jealous. I just talked to a mommy friend who told me her boys like to get to school early so they can run. "Run?" I asked. Yep, they run. The "Morning Mile" it's called and kids at this elementary school can choose to get a jump on the day by running laps.
Jogging around a quarter-mile track as many times as they like, these kiddos get straws at key intervals. When done, they cash in their straws and log their miles. Say a straw designates one lap. Then four straws would equal one mile. One of my friend's boys has already logged 90 miles. Very cool.
My friend tells me only three schools in our district offer this fitness program, coordinated by individual PE teachers and staffed by parent volunteers. My seven-year-old is not the lucky recipient of such a program, but I bet he'd love the personal challenge, the competition, the adrenalin rush at the beginning of the day. I'd love the exercise he'd get.
I'd love to know if the Morning Mile is anywhere on my school's agenda. I think I'll ask. If it's not, I'll just run the idea by those who make key decisions regarding the health and fitness of kids.
