Q. Hi Fitz, I'm trying to lose weight, but exercising is a problem for me since I am almost 300 pounds. I have a bad knee and my hip hurts, so I am looking for an exercise tape that is low impact but helps me burn as many calories as possible during the work out. Thank you, Paula
A. Hello Miss Paula, I'm glad to hear from you. I've trained many people who weigh between 300 and 500 pounds, and the pain you're feeling in your knees and hip is not unusual. The more weight we carry, the more strain our joints endure. You're wise to look for low impact exercises.
Having said that. There are a ton of great options for you. In fact, you'd be fine giving a looksy at any videos titled low impact. Everyone has unique tastes when it comes to fitness classes, so I'm only going to make one recommendation. Richard Simmons' Sweatin' to the Oldies. Richard doesn't do cool, hip, or trendy at all. But he owns the market on creating fun, energetic, low-impact and appropriate workouts for the obese population. He's even really good for the non-obese population as well.
Beyond that Paula, I suggest you look around. Rent some from your local library and give them a try for free before you invest. I think there are about 700 million fitness videos available, so certainly you'll find a few to suit you. Work hard lady! Keep me posted on your success; I can't wait to hear all about it! Fitz
Q. Hey Fitzness Lady, I'm 16. My Mom makes me drink lots of milk (whole milk) and that's fine, but I think it's one of the things contributing to my weight gain. What do you think? She'll listen to you. Angel
A. Hi Angel and hi Mom! Easy answer. Switch to skim milk. It offers 100% of the good stuff that whole milk offers, but none of the bad (fat). Now have a hug and a glass of calcium together. Cheers!

I have a question: Can I do pilates or yoga every day, or do I need to rest some days? If I can't do it every day, how many days a week do I have to rest?

Hi! My 12-year-old daughter has started getting into fitness, all on her own motivation. She's always been on the thin side, and is certainly a healthy weight, and a fairly healthy eater. She said she wants to work out to build muscle and put on a few pounds (certainly not what you usually hear from girls at that age group). I want to support her, but be sure she is doing things in a healthy way, and doing what is right for her at her age. She lives with her dad, and we live in different states, which certainly makes matters more complicated - if she lived with me we could figure out ways to exercise together, and her dad and his girlfriend are both overweight with unhealthy habits.
Any suggestions on how to get started, and anything she shouldn't be doing yet or things I should look out for?
Thanks
