I'm all too familiar with the dreaded "afternoon energy slump," and unfortunately lots of other people are too. It drags us down and gets in the way of work productivity, exercise, and when we start reaching for sugary snacks and high-calorie jumbo coffees it can even drag down our dieting and healthy eating efforts.Thankfully there are several tools at our disposal for fighting the afternoon blahs, and no none of them involve ways to sneak in a quick nap at your desk (as nice as that would be some days!). Actually it comes down to what you eat, mostly. Getting enough rest every night is also a big part of it, but even with a solid 8 hours of shut-eye you may find yourself fighting heavy eyelids come 3pm -- and that's when the right snack can make a big difference. WATER Fatigue and sluggishness are common symptoms of dehydration. And not only can dehydration make you feel tired, but thirst is commonly mistaken for hunger by a lot of people. So first things first when you start to feel tired: Drink a big glass of water!
BRAZIL NUTS Just a small handful (about 6 nuts) will give you a solid dose of protein, healthy plant fats, selenium, and magnesium. This combination with give you a serious energy and mood boost!
MEXICAN BAKED POTATO Although potatoes aren't for everyone (not generally recommended for diabetics) the carbs can be just the thing to give you an energy surge and get you through the afternoon. Put some spicy salsa and sour cream for added effect -- the spices will wake you up even more.
DRIED DATES Just a few dried dates, eaten with a little low-fat cream cheese to slow absorption, can give you a quick energy boost plus a nice dose of potassium.
WHOLE WHEAT PB&J This old standard sandwich is an energy gold mine due to the healthy fats, protein, whole grains, and carbs. Make with only one slice of bread and it will only run you about 200 cals.
I'm a big fan of apple slices with peanut butter myself, although it's hard for me to remember to prep it ahead of time (I won't take the time out once I'm at work to slice apples!) so maybe something easier like nuts is a good idea. These are just a few ideas, so please share: what works for you to get over the afternoon slump?
