The danger with healthy restaurant options

You know those healthy indicators found next to menu items at some restaurants? I'm picturing the menu at one of my favorite spots showing a fork with a little halo wrapped around it. Meant to designate healthy fare, these types of menu markings are great for those trying to cut back while dining out. Or are they?
A recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Research and cited in the February issue of Redbook magazine states: "Many people rationalize that if they've saved calories on the main course, that gives them permission to eat more of other things."
People who choose healthier options consume an average of 131 percent more calories from side dishes, drinks, and desserts than they would have eaten had they opted for the "less healthy" meal.
Of course, you should still pick the most balanced and nutritious meals on your out-to-eat menu. Just avoid diet traps like the bread basket, cream-based sauces, salad dressings, alcohol, and over-indulging.
