Considering a Minnie marathon

Posted on Jan 23rd 2008 7:00AM by Jacki Donaldson
My marathon-running cousin is trying to coax me into tackling a 15K race. The Disney's 2008 Women Run the World event in Orlando, Florida -- part of the May 2-4 Minnie Marathon Weekend -- would have me competing with bunches of women, all celebrating the miracle of health and fitness.

I'm tempted, not by the time of year -- May can be pretty hot and humid in Florida -- and not by the 6:15 AM start time, but by the opportunity to prove to myself that I have the endurance and stamina to master a nine-mile challenge. Still, it's nine miles (well, more like 9.3).

Can I run nine miles? Sure, in theory, I can -- I just have to make a commitment, train, and make it happen. But something has me hesitating. Maybe it's my shin splints that come and go. Maybe it's the training schedule I'm not prepared to take on. Maybe it's that I'm OK with the four or five miles I know I'm capable of accomplishing. Do I need to take on more?

Yes, says my cousin. Yes, says my husband. Yes, says that little whisper in my head. What do you say? Go for it? Or be happy with the strides I've already made?
