Taking Off Ten: Feed a cold?
Whether you've got 10, 20 or 100 lbs to shed, weight loss is hard. Taking Off Ten is about the journey to lose 10 lbs -- there's more to it than you think!I'm a pretty healthy person -- I rarely get sick, and when I do come down with a case of the sniffles, it usually clears up within a couple of days. But right now, I've been sick on and off for a couple of weeks, and when I woke up this morning with a hacking cough, I knew it was back 'on.' Ugh.
When I'm sick, all my good intentions go out the window. I forsake the gym in favour of curling up in bed with a book, and convince myself to indulge in my favourite comfort foods, like spaghetti and meatballs, macaroni and cheese. Really, all bets are off when I'm sick. I use food to make myself feel better, even though I know in my head, it won't.But this time around, I'm trying to be better, trying to not use illness as an excuse. Because ultimately, I never feel better when I've eaten too much or veered far from my goals.
So, I went to the gym this morning for my regular Monday-morning weight class, hacking cough and all, and though I didn't have an much energy as usual, I felt better after it was all over. I plan on taking it easy for the rest of the day, and I'm hoping my comfort food cravings don't get the best of me.

When I'm sick and I want exercise, I just dance to Madonna or something at home for an hour in my PJ's all snotty and coughy, but all alone! =)
I don't ever have an appetite for any 'real' food when I'm sick so I end up losing some water weight from just eating soup.

Awesome. Now everybody in your gym will be able to enjoy your sniffles!!!
Not stuffing yourself is good advice. But people, please refrain from spreading your germs about in a gym. Those places are unhealthy already with all the sweat.

Hi JV,
I understand your concerns; However, several sources I've checked with say that a cold is only contagious in the first couple of days -- I've had mine for a while now and am on the mend, so I doubt I am contagious. Also, I make sure to sneeze into my elbow, I clean every piece of equipment I use and I don't get to close to anyone at the gym. There are millions of viruses and bacteria everywhere that can make someone sick, and to be honest, I don't think it's my fault if someone else doesn't wash their hands. Sick people are everywhere and that's not going to change so I think we should work on protecting ourselves, rather than trying to single out every person with a cold who goes out in public.
Thanks for your feedback.
