Taking Off Ten: Pinpointing vices
Whether you've got 10, 20 or 100 lbs to shed, weight loss is hard. Taking Off Ten is about the journey to lose 10 lbs -- there's more to it than you think! One of the first steps in losing weight is figuring out what the vice foods are. That's not to say that I plan on removing any of these fully from my diet -- That doesn't work for me; I end up craving it even more. But it's important to know what my weaknesses are. I'll be honest--I have a lot of vice foods--but here are the main ones, in order:
- Cheese
- Alcohol, particularly wine
- Pasta and Bread
- Chocolate
- Desserts
As for alcohol. I like my wine. And wine can be healthy, as long as I don't drink too much of it. Excessive imbibing is bad in two ways -- firstly, it adds precious calories onto my daily total, and secondly, it makes me feel a bit worse for wear the next day, and when I'm under the weather, I head the for the fattening comfort food. So the wine has to be restricted to only a couple of glasses on weekends.
I am a carb queen. I love big plates of spaghetti, and I stick to whole wheat, healthy, carbs, but I have to watch my portions. Pasta will only be an occasional indulgence for me.
And sugar, oh sugar. I love sweet things, but I don't love the lack of energy I feel when I eat too much of them. I'm ridding my house of sweets, and I'm going to resolve to say no to dessert for the next little while. It might not be entirely successful, but it's a start.
Like I said, I'm not going to cut these things out--I don't believe that deprivation is the way to go--but I am going to make an honest effort to reduce these things in my diet.
What are your vices?

Brownies. I can control myself around everything else, but I could probably eat a whole pan at the drop of a hat.

I get bored at night after I put the kids to bed
I think its my time, so I need to find some activities I can do that do not involve eating to relax me

Patricia - my grandma taught me how to crochet when I was really little, now I do that when I'm watching tv to keep my hands busy and my mind on something else. I also try to always have gum on hand because that keeps your mouth busy!

I also absolutely LOVE cheese, pasta, and breads. I only buy natural, whole wheat bread and try not to eat pasta too often. But I love, love, love cheese! I try to pair it with grapes or apples so I'll eat less and I'm getting some good food with it as well.

I think we share our vices.
Cheese is my big one. Love cheese. I could almost be vegan, if it wasn't for cheese. I would eat it with every meal, plus a snack. I really have to limit myself to once a day, or I would have a problem.
Chocolate. But I only eat good, dark chocolate (most of the time - my mom sends chocolates for every holiday), and have 1-3 of those tiny squares a day, for a total of less than 50-100 calories, most of the time.
Wine. 1 glass most nights, occasionally more. I would probably drop a few pounds if I would quit this, but I don't think it's hurting much.
Grains. I love oatmeal, pasta, fresh bread. I try to keep it to whole grains, and I'm watching my portions.
I also realized that another source of calories for me is tortilla chips. I love salsa, which is not a bad choice, but the chips that go with it add up fast. But I don't know how else to eat it - I've tried carrots and things, but it's not the same. And I always use salsa for my "dressing" on my salads.

Thanks for sharing. I'm with you -- I could probably go vegan except for cheese. I love it too much.
I say keep the wine and the chocolate in your life -- these things are healthy in moderation, which you seem to practice quite well!
Salsa on your salad, eh? Good idea ...
