Taking Off Ten: An introduction

Posted: Jan 3rd 2008 6:33PM by Martha Edwards

Whether you've got 10, 20 or 100 lbs to shed, weight loss is hard. Taking Off Ten is about the journey to lose 10 lbs -- there's more to it than you think!

Taking off Ten (pounds, that is) has been the story of my life. I've always been a little more than slim but not quite overweight. I'm a normal weight for my height (5'7) and that's always been the excuse I fall back on when I feel it's time to get my butt in gear. Yet I've always had a naggy yearning in the back of my head to tone up and get rid of that godforsaken paunch. This voice got louder earlier this year, when my favourite pants were tight. I knew I had to do something or the weight would slowly creep up until it wasn't taking off 10 but taking off 20, 50, maybe even 100. Yikes.

I'm not a big fan of New Year's resolutions--I say if you want to change your life, why wait until the new year to do it? But this year, the beginning of January coincides with the time of my life when I've had enough and am finally going to start being the person I know I should be -- toned, fit and healthy. Today, January 3rd, is my first day back at work after giving myself a bit of time off during Christmas, and since I'm back to the grind, it's the perfect time to get back to healthy eating. Which means I'm throwing out the shortbread my mom sent home with me, pronto!

I'm starting off at 145 lbs. That ain't bad but it's not right for me, so I'm aiming for 135 lbs. I'm not giving myself a deadline, but I'd like to lose one or two lbs a week, which would mean 5-10 weeks. However, January's going to be a busy month for me so who knows how it will go. So I'll be posting my progress and my thoughts as I go, and I'd love for you to join me. I'd also love to hear about your own journey, so feel free to leave a comment.
