A hand washing refresher
Categories: Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control states hand washing is the most effective technique to prevent the spread of disease. Pathetically, only 67 percent of Americans wash their hands with anything, even water, after using the restroom. In some parts of the country less than half soap up.
Don't forget to wash the top and bottom of your hands for 15-30 seconds with soap, especially after coming into contact with:
-
Doorknobs
- Toilet flush handles
- Bathroom faucets
- Any garbage can, dishrag or cutting board that contacts raw food
- A pet -- you know they're not washing their paws!
- A dirty diaper
- Plants or soil
- Visiting a hospital or nursing home
You should also wash your hands before and after you eat, and routinely clean those bathroom surfaces, doorknobs and garbage can lids, too. Another good suggestion is to sing "Happy Birthday" twice through as you wash -- 15 seconds is longer than you think.
