Your child's BMI really is an important number to know

A model's BMI! What? Are you serious? Don't get me wrong, while I agree that our emaciated model problem needs to be addressed, it doesn't deserve the attention it's getting -- we aren't a nation of underweight people. Sadly, and more importantly, we are a nation of well, obese people -- and sadly that includes our kids!Look around you. Look at your children. That's where the BMI index will be more useful and thankfully schools are taking notice, because you're not!
Some schools are sending Body Mass Index scores home with report cards. The BMI, in case you didn't know, is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both boys and girls (men and women). And, though I agree with the new school program, there are problems: scores are handed to parents without any explanation or guidance, like what they mean or what can be done about them (and the BMI does have limitations that people should be aware of). And never mind that many of the schools involved don't even have the resources themselves to provide healthy meals or daily physical education (there is absolutely nothing that I would eat being served in most school cafeterias these days!).
My suggestion: You've heard it before, parents need to be more involved.Because the whole idea of this program is sad... Do you actually need a piece of paper to tell you that your son or daughter is fat before you'll do anything about it? Evidently you do! So look at the score (for what it's worth) and do something. Educate yourself. Ask for help. Take the time to learn about what your kids should be eating and how much they should be exercising and maybe it will rub off on you!
Note: If you don't get a BMI report from your school, keepkidshealthy.com has a BMI calculator for children ages 2 to 20.
