Six fixes for hunger
Dieting? Hungry? Those two seem to go hand in hand. After all, diets are all about deprivation, right? Wrong. You don't have to be hungry when you diet. You just need to be smart about how you're eating. If you're hungry and trying to lose weight, here are some things to munch on from WebMD:
- Protein. It really is best for curbing hunger and keeping you full for a long time.
- Fiber. Fiber slows down the rate at which food gets processed in your body, which means it will fill you up and keep you full.
- Nuts. nuts add protein to your diet and they're a good source of healthy fat too.
- Exercise. If you get some activity in when you're hungry, you'll curb your appetite. Try it -- it works!
- Keep your hands busy. Eat something that requires some work -- think edamame or nuts in the shell. It will help distract you while you eat.
- Taste something. Sometimes pleasing your tastebuds will alleviate hungry. Try some herbal tea, a mint or some gum.

Or you can do what I do...
Drink tons of water so that you're running to the bathroom every 20 minutes (this doesn't work so well because chugging water only alleviates hunger pains for about 5 minutes if that).
And...
Suck on sunflower seeds! Now I know a lot of you will frown on the sodium but it really does work, and it fufills two of Martha's suggestions.

How about eating when you're hungry? Starvation is not the answer. Eating healthy, stopping when you're full, and exercising is the key.

Yeah, I agree, drinking lots of water is helpful. Especially drinking water before a meal is good because it decreases the chance that you will overeat.
And, I have also found that snacking throughout the day, on a regular schedule, on small portions of whole foods that are healthy, works really well for losing pounds and not starving yourself. You stay filled up most of the day and you get to snack! Nice.

I tend to grab anything that's there even if I'm not hungry...it's a problem. Hmm. If I have nuts then I end up having a LOT of nuts.

Drinking hot green or white tea helps me through out the day. I work in an office and have my own small coffee pot outside the kitchen in my office so I can stay away from all the goodies other co-workers have brought to share. Candy, cookies, cake, doughnuts etc. I also don't put candy on my desk or in my office. Instead I keep a couple extra tea bags and cups so I can offer hot tea to my clients or co-workers, as I sip away.

Sucking up coffee & tea isn't a good way to do it if you have tendancy to retain fluids in your tissues especially if your have heart trouble or thyroid problems.
Just try your best and know that eating heavy sweets at the office isn't going to make you look good in 6 more months... on the beach.I suppose you just look at your mother and know that you will look just like her in 20 years and if you don't like it then start now to change your eating habits.

The best way to curb hunger is to eat 6-8 small balanced meals to keep blood sugar levels in check and to drink alot of water. To lose weight add cardio and strength training and you will see a change quickly.

Please, don't follow Ofelia's advice. And God please send her help. I have struggled with weight all my life, but substituting one dangerously bad food relationship pattern for another just gives you another type of unhealthiness. We were designed for moderation. Excess of anything, food ("healthy" and decadent"), exercise, sleep, lack of sleep, spending, - excess of anything isn't healthy. you must achieve a balance.

I always felt that keeping saltine crackers around (or unsalted) helps to control my hunger. I just munch on it and I'm fine. I don't keep nuts aorund, cause they're fattening, but they are not a bad option. I eat a little at a time of everything. If I have a sandwich, I'll eat a little bit at a time and save the rest for later to snack on. I think people should eat what they want, but in moderation. And if you eat something fattening or high carb, make up for it by eating something light later or being a little more active. I need to start exercising more though. I hate gyms, so I just do alot of walking and at home I keep dumbbells aorund to workout my arms or bring them with me as I go walking. Playing sports, any sport, (even if you're bad it) is another very good way to go. Instead of watching tv, keep your mind pre-occupied by playing games, like puzzles or board games or something like that. But if you don't have time to eat or you're busy, keep some dry crackers around (not the fattening or flavorful kind, as that will tempt you to eat more of it) and water. I always felt that the salt in the crackers helps to satisfy my tastebuds. And always get plenty of sleep, as that will also curb your hunger and keep you mentally sharp. As far as meat and any animal products, which are supposedly healthy for you or helps you to curve your hunger... it may be true, but meat just sits there in your digestive system, sometimes making you more sluggish. Animal products have more sodium, fat and sometimes calories. I've actually felt more alert and have had a healthier digestive system when I stop eating animal products. The more tired, nervous or sluggish you feel, the more likely you'll want to eat.

The more tired, nervous or sluggish you feel, the more likely you'll want to eat. And always TASTE your food. Absorb the taste of it. Try to assess the flavor. Then you are more likely limit how much you eat, probably. What one of my friends does all the time, is she's always comparing the flavor of foods, judging whether or not she really likes it. She eats for flavor and stops. Out of motherly habit, I always tell her to finish her food (even though i never do myself), but she says she could save money by saving the rest of the meal for lunch the next day or later on or she can save it for somebody else to eat. That's another way... you can save the cost.

edamame nuts??? Good grief folks....Google tells me that edamame is, really, green soybeans? Just think I've been living in the Mississippi delta around all of those wonderful edamame "nuts" and didn't know it.....and all this time, I thought the only good thing you could make out of soybeans was ice cream and tofu. My soul food eatin' grandpa would roll over in his grave if he knew all the stuff they are making out of the soybeans he used to grow.
