Whole grains, fiber cut pancreatic cancer risk by 40%
Whole grains make for delicious foods (breakfast especially), and the more you eat them, the lower your risk of developing pancreatic cancer later on, according to a new study. In addition to eating more whole grains, consuming more fiber was also linked with a lessening in pancreatic cancer risk. The study concluded that those eating both whole grains and fiber several times per day decreased their pancreatic cancer risk by 40 percent. That's significant, yes?
Instead of those sugary breakfast cereals, how about oatmeal made with whole-grain (not refined) oats? Add some wheat germ in there and sweeten it with organic cane sugar or stevia. Once you get used to it, it's miles ahead of Frosted Flakes, in taste and nutrition.

Oatmeal is delicious! Even the old-fashioned oats (not instant or quick) cook up in the microwave in five minutes: 1 cup oatmeal with two cups milk. (Use a LARGE bowl so they don't bubble over and make a mess.) This makes 1 large serving or two medium. I mix in a bit of brown sugar and a sprinkle of nuts. And I never get hungry before lunch! You might be surprised to see how tasty (and inexpensive) it is, compared to those ready-to-eat cereals.

There are so many health reasons we should be eating more whole grains and fewer refined ones.
The thing that really irritates me is the way so many grocery store products make it sound like they're whole grain when they're partly or even mostly white flour. "Made with whole grain," my ass. I've bought these by mistake more than once!
(Silly blog post about it here: http://www.crankyfitness.com/2007/04/white-whole-wheat.html)

My husband was diagnosed as Type II six years ago. We went to the Diabetes Support group at the local hospital for nutritional information. The nutritionist strongly supported (and so does The Zone Diet) eating a portion of coarse cut oatmeal in the mornings. We have been on The Zone Diet since then, and my husband has lost and kept off 50 excess pounds. I make up several days supply of McCann's Coarse Cut Oatmeal, add slivered or raw almonds and chopped apple, cinnamon and nutmeg. It is tastely and nutricious. Just microwave a one serving portion in a bowl, add some Smart Balance spread and top with either skim milk or Soy milk. It's a great way to start the day, and it is satisfying as well.

lol Crabby. ALL of my grandparents have died from cancer. Lung cancer related. So I don't smoke. As for fiber , that sounds great but I'd actually have to get off my rear and WALK to get some exercise! HAA.

Do fiber supplements work as well? The awful kind that you drink, I mean.

Whole Grains are great but when they are milled they quickly oxidize and the nutrients are almost gone in 2 days. Granted the fiber is there though. Trying fresh milling wheat to make breads and even a flaker for oats to maximize the nutrition. I promise you you will notice the difference!!!!!

Becareful of wheat germ. It gives me athsma attacks. It is great if you are not allergic to wheat but if you have allergies and/or a problem with gluten it could kill you.

Archer Farms makes a great organic multi grain oatmeal with 5 different grains including flax seed. I've taken to eating that in the morning instead of regular oatmeal. It sticks with me through lunch time. It's very satisfying and I enjoy the flavor far more than regular oatmeal. I get mine at Targette' (Target).

I'm convinced that the best cold cereal on the market is Kashi. Some of their cereals have VERY high fiber, and the ingredients are of the highest quality. I have one of their high-fiber cereals every day and I add 2 TBSP each of wheat germ, wheat bran and ground flax seed, plus a banana and raisins, so I get around 20 grams of fiber with breakfast alone. It's also delicious!! Beans are also very high fiber. (Don't forget the fresh fuits and veggies, and exercise!)

I am wondering what is better for you soy milk, or organic cow's milk. I tried vanila rice milk and must have an allergy to it as I had burning and itching on my ears for hours after eating it on my whole grain cereal. Even my kitty must have had an allergic reaction...she got bumps on her ears and was itching after eating the remains of the rice milk. Anyone else have this happen?

Try "Optimum Power" cereal -- 13 grams of fiber per serving and it's made from Organic whole grains, with flax seeds, and dried blueberries. I like to eat mine with light soy milk; I used to use hazelnut milk -- it's also delicious. I don't have any allergies to rice milk (see Promise Cornette's post); Promise, are you allergic to rice?

I love whole grains and fiber! It's great that at least a few things I like the taste of are good for you! Many times, I force myself to eat healthy but don't enjoy the taste. So I treasure the things that give me the best of both worlds!
