Paying more to weigh less

Eating healthy is something that is often promoted here on ThatsFit. We talk about the importance of eating whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources, and even nutritional supplements. But, whenever I go to the grocery store and see the exorbitant amount of money I spend, I'm reminded of the reason why so many people do not follow a healthy diet: It's Expensive.

Why spend $3.00 on a package of antioxidant rich blueberries when you can buy a bag of 50 cookies for $1.25? Even if you shell out the extra $1.75 and opt for the blueberries, you'll still be consuming some unhealthy pesticides -- that is, unless you are willing to spend $4.25 on the organic blueberries. See where I'm going with this?

It almost seems as though there should be a government subsidy paid to people who follow a healthy diet. Such an idea may appear to be a bit crazy at first, but when you take into account how much money the government will later pay for people who suffer from obesity related complications and diseases (diabetes, heart disease, etc.), an effort at prevention may actully prove to be more cost effective.
