Peak water

The phrase 'Peak Oil' is one that is situated quite firmly in our collective consciousness, particularly when we are spending well over three dollars a gallon at the pump. However, inasmuch as this peak oil situation causes concern amongst consumers and geo-political jousting with such countries as China, are we now on the 'peak' of a far more dangerous shortage crisis?

Peak Water. It's unfortunately become a very real threat to the world population. Even now, southern towns and cities are bracing for a water shortage here in the United States. As policymakers scramble to prepare the nation for what could be a serious clean-water crisis, there are steps that we all can take to help in that crusade.

Perhaps the most simple of these steps is to limit the time we spend in the shower. The following list, sourced from Women's Health Magazine, provides a minute-by-minute breakdown of just how cutting down your shower time can save a signifcant amount of water.

1 Minute. Per Day Savings = 2.75 gallons. Per Year Savings = The amount that gushes from a fire hydrant in 60 seconds (1,003 gallons). Over 50 Years Savings = Enough to overflow the 10-foot-deep aquarium at the Virginia Science Museum(50,187 gallons)

2 Minutes. Per Day Savings = About the amount of water some families in Africa uses per day (5.5 gallons). Per Year Savings = Enough to sustain 28 fish in a Japanes koi pond (2,007 gallons). Over 50 Years = A little more than the average American household per year (100,375 gallons)

3 Minutes. Per Day Savings = 8.25 gallons. Per Year Savings = Enough to fill an above-ground swimming pool (3,011 gallons). Over 50 Years Savings = The amont of water flowing over Niagra Falls each second (150,562 gallons)

4. Minutes. Per Day Savings = 11 gallons. Per Year Savings = Enough to grow a bushel of corn (4,015 gallons). Over 50 Years Savings = The total amount of water residents of Prophestown, IL uses per day (200,750).

5 Minutes. Per Day Savings = Slightly more than the Bosh Next Wave Washing Machine uses per load (13.75 gallons). Per Year Savings = Enough to grow a Christmas tree (5,018 gallons). Over 50 Years Savings = The amount of water flushed down the toilets at Gilette Stadium on a Patriot's game day (250,937 gallons).
