Thinking of bleaching your teeth at home? Things to know
We've all seen the ads for over-the-counter teeth whiteners, and I'll admit to being curious about them myself. I've never taken the leap, however, because I'm concerned about safety and the long-term health of my teeth. But then I read this article from the Seattle Times.According to them, if the directions are followed closely and you don't try to whiten too frequently, then bleaching your teeth with an OTC whitener can be safe and effective. However, though these methods are inexpensive compared to having your dentist do the procedure, they don't last nearly as long -- one to six months, compared to six to twelve months when done professionally.
Additionally, OTC whiteners don't work on things like caps, crowns, veneers, or dentures, and they also aren't effective on certain stains. So if you're willing to accept those conditions and don't try to over-whiten your teeth, it appears to be a safe enough procedure.

I have used over the counter teeth whitening for sometime now and always get compliments on how white my teeth are. My dentist even cant believe how great my teeth look and says there is no damage to my teeth.

I have whitened my teeth with OTC things before and they work wonderfully. I have little enamel on my teeth from years of eating lemons so they get pretty stained since I'm a heavy coffee and tea drinker. I use the Crest Whitestrips of varying strengths but I couldn't tell you which one is best. They make your teeth and gums very sensitive, but the results last, at least for me, for a whole year. I can put up with a week of pain for a year of white teeth.

My sister bleached her teeth and they look great! About the fourth week she started to lose her sense of taste, and we're wondering if the two could be connected. Anyone else have a similar problem?

I am a dentist, and just want to clarify one thing from the article. The article states "OTC whiteners don't work on things like caps, crowns, veneers, or dentures". Well, our professional whiteners don't work on those things, either. Basically, nothing man-made will lighten due to bleaching.
In response to the 2 posters above, I'm glad to hear that you have found something that works for you ! Some people will have good results with OTC's, some not so good results. Just like everything else with the human body, results vary from individual to individual.
Lastly, sensitivity is the most common side effect of bleaching, whether at home or in a dental office. There are ways to prevent/decrease the sensitivity, but I don't know of any OTC products that will have this same effect.

I have used the otc teeth whitners, and my friends have ask me how I keep my teeth so white. I tell them, they may try it, or they may not. But, I'm glad the stains are gone....I do drink a lot of tea.

I like the way you think, Nate! I think a glossy mercury AND lead-based white paint might be even more effective, however.

To the person who uses a Mercury based paint to whiten their teeth..... This is extremely dangerous. I am a medical professional and Mercury, even in microscopic droplets ingested, can cause Cancer and even death. Mercury also causes hair loss on all body parts. I work with this chemical daily, so I do know of what I speak.
As for OTC bleaching products. I like the Crest strips, the lower priced ones actually. When used daily for 3 days, I can tell a significant difference by the weekend, and I am an avid coffee and tea drinker. My favorite was the Rembrant mouth trays that they no longer make. But Crest left on for 30 minutes, definitely works and gets compliments as well.

Our dentist says my husband's rather dark natural teeth (vs. his caps) could not be whitened...he grew up drinking and using only well water all his life. Dentist knew that immediately.

I brush my teeth with sensodyne toothpaste regularly when bleaching my teeth. This takes away that ugly sensation you get that feels to me like putting foil on top of a crown...yuk!

My daughter bleached her teeth with one of these OCT whiteners and it made the enamel so thin that four of her front teeth cracked in half. The bottom half crumbled. We later found out she had compromised teeth because of the medicine she takes to control seizures. I wish we had known that before. So be aware.

As a Hygienist, I cant recommend enough to patients who want to keep away staining to use a Sonicare toothbrush. Great investment for overall dental health! It keeps my daily coffee habit from ever being seen. My cleanest patients use sonicare and I rarely have to polish their teeth. Oh, and if you have sensitivity while bleaching with OTC or professional methods....use a fluoride rinse like ACT a few days before and after and dont use a whiteing toothpaste afterwards....just to keep the sensitivity down.
Brush, Floss....Smile :)
