Workplace Fitness: Are you working in one of the most sedentary cities?

Categories: Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

It's no secret that one of the biggest obstacles for all of us in our quest to be healthy and physically active as adults is the overwhelming and growing number of sedentary career and job options. In the olden days everybody, spare the king maybe, had to work physically for their living in some form or another and as a result it was much easier to be fit naturally as a course of living. Now I'm not suggesting we trade in our computer desks and telephones for the technology and science-impaired lifestyles of ages past (I'll pass on catching Polio, thank you) but we definitely have to do something to get moving. This is ridiculous.

Obesity and lazy sloth-like lifestyles are linked to more than 112,000 deaths each year and also feed into countless chronic and potentially deadly conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Forbes recently compiled a list of the nation's 20 most sedentary cities -- are you in one of them?Do you think it's mostly to blame on how people are spending their free time? I can agree with that (the study looked at TV watching time combined with the last time people exercised) but I also think your job has a big impact. Whether it's simply the number of hours you work (2 jobs anyone?) or the fact that you're just so stressed and pressed for time that you can never seem to squeeze a workout in, your career has a lot to do with your health. How is your job affecting you? Do you think your area and city has anything to do with it? Do certain cities attract certain sedentary jobs?

Who knows what the reason, but it's definitely worth your while to know whether you're in a place that's notoriously bad when it comes to encouraging exercise. Here's the top 20 most sedentary cities:
  1. Memphis
  2. New Orleans
  3. Las Vegas
  4. Detroit
  5. Birmingham
  6. Louisville
  7. San Antonio
  8. Jacksonville
  9. Nashville
  10. Miami
  11. Houston
  12. Tampa
  13. San Diego
  14. Pittsburgh
  15. Oklahoma City
  16. Indianapolis
  17. Atlanta
  18. Richmond
  19. Cleveland
  20. Philadelphia
Of course how active you are is a personal choice that is 100% yours to make, but understanding how you're environment may be affecting you or dragging you down is a very valuable tool!
