Do you support green companies?
A week ago, I told you about a study that showed that China and Australia were found to be the greenest countries in the world, based on how serious their citizens were about taking care of the environment, how many steps they took to reduce their carbon footprint and how much they supported green companies. It got me thinking about that last point -- supporting companies who support the environment. Do you make a special effort to purchase goods or services from companies who you know have a good, solid, eco-friendly reputation? In most ways, I try to be good to the environment, but this is one regard where I am not doing so well.I often don't think much about the companies I give my money to, and I don't look into their environmental impact. I tend to go for places that are convenient, and now that I think of it, I'm a little mad at myself for doing so.
Here's an example: When I was a fresh-faced college student, I worked at the photocopy centre at a Staples store. Every now and then, an order for 20,000 pages would get botched, either by the machine or human error, and we'd have to get ride of it. But you know where it went? Not to get recycled, that's for sure. It just went into the trash. It used to bug me to no end, so now that I'm not an employee, I never use the copy centre at Staples.
But if you're like me, there is hope. Do research. Look into the companies you're giving your money to, and see how well they stack up on the green scale. Use the Internet -- this website, for instance, can help you figure out which companies you should use. It's such a simple thing, but it makes so much sense.
