Are you in it for the long haul? Five important tests for women

This article claims that most women (at least those in New Jersey, a state that requires annual vehicle inspections) take better care of their car than they do of their body. I know what my car looks like on a daily basis, so this statement has me concerned for women everywhere!Go ahead and get that car inspected. Get your oil changed, your tires rotated, and those brakes repaired so that you can safely and legally hit the road again. Then use that car to get yourself to your doctor on a yearly basis and have these five important screening tests done:
- Heart: Everyone should have their baseline cholesterol and triglycerides levels done. Blood pressure is commonly checked, but women who are experiencing heart symptoms may also be scheduled for a stress echocardiogram. Those at risk for diabetes might also need a blood sugar test.
- Reproductive: Get that annual Pap smear, and ask your practitioner about the new HPV test as well. Unlike the vaccine -- which targets women age 13-26 -- the HPV test is for everyone.
- Breasts: Get your baseline mammogram at age 40 (some doctors recommend 35). If there's a history of cancer in your family, get your first done 10 years before your relative was diagnosed. Monthly self breast exams and annual breast exams by your doctor are strongly encouraged as well.
- Are you 50? Then you need a colonoscopy. Sure, it isn't pleasant, but usually you'll only need on every 10 years.
- Everyone over 18 needs an annual, full body skin exam to check for dangerous melanoma. Keep tabs on your skin once a month yourself to check for new brown or red spots, or changes in existing moles.
