I remember when I found out I was pregnant for the first time, I didn't want to do anything to risk my or my baby's health. It took a few weeks to get my feet on the ground and realize that, in general, keeping my own healthy habits in place was the best I could do to ensure a healthy pregnancy. That's why I'm concerned about this new study that found that vigorous
exercise during the first trimester increases the risk of miscarriage. Though some women have unique circumstances, OBs usually say that if you've been active all along, it's ok to continue exercising in pregnancy. Though this study may change the way health professionals feel about
vigorous exercise, I hope it doesn't keep pregnant women on the couch in fear, because mild to moderate exercise -- as well as swimming -- appear to be safe. After all, childbirth is the workout to end all workouts, and being physically fit will certainly help you through it.
