Little do some folks know that over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are miniature versions of some prescription drugs with less potency. Just because you can buy them without a prescription does not mean they are harmless. In fact, combining some prescription medications with OTC ones could be very dangerous, which is a good reason to always mention OTC products you are on to your doctor or pharmacist.
But how about if you're not on any prescription drugs at all -- are you still at risk? You could be, if you fall into the following groups. Always, always ask a medical professional before embarking on any self-medication.
- Pregnant women, and women who are trying to get pregnant.
- Women who are breast-feeding.
- Children.
- Older adults.
- People with health conditions.
- People taking any other medication, whether prescription or over the counter.
