The CulinaryPrep tumbler kills bacteria for a healthier kitchen

This is one of those gadgets that you don't really need (just clean your kitchen and handle food properly) but you might want anyway. I'm not saying I necessarily want it, but guaranteed somebody out there does.

It's called the CulinaryPrep and it claims to kill up to 99.5% of bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, listeria, and others. For only $400 (whoa!) you can tumble your food to disinfected safety in a matter of minutes.

To me it seems easier (and it just makes more sense) to keep a clean kitchen and watch what your doing when you prepare food. Washing your hands and being careful not to cross-contaminate isn't that difficult, is it?

Unfortunately, sterilizing the food will not only kill germs, but it will also destroy nutrients. Heat destroys vitamins, denatures proteins, and more. Also, we used to get some beneficial flora from food. I'm not sure if that is true any longer, agribusiness being what it is now, but there are good bacteria that we need for our digestive tract to function properly. And a great deal of the immune system lives right in the digestive tract.

A good quality yogurt (not the sugared up variety) or probiotic can provide beneficial flora, but for many this is not enough. Some people, like Jordan Rubin (author of The Maker's Diet) have needed to take "homeostatic soil organisms" to heal severe gastrointestinal disturbances. These are the bacteria that we used to get from the soil before we started spraying it with chemicals and sterilizing everything in sight.

In light of this, I think a simple washing of fruits and vegetables should be enough. Pesticides won't be removed as they become incorporated into every cell of the plant, so organic really the way to go. As for meats, buy from a reputable local farmer if you can, preferably pasture raised animals. Cook them to the temperatures recommended by the USDA, take your probiotics to crowd out the bad stuff, and you should be fine.
