'No such thing' as a detox?
Categories: Diet & Weight Loss
Have you ever considered a 'detox' diet (or weekend, heh) that would purge your system of unwanted junk? Even more, were you able to lose a substantial amount of weight from using detox methods? I have, although staying detoxed using healthy eating and drinking is now a lifestyle choice. But, do detox diets actually work within the goal framework of getting someone to lose weight and keep it off? Dietitian Joanna McMillan-Price says that, "really there is no such thing as a detox" -- but do you agree?
McMillan correctly points out that the liver continually detoxes the body anyway, so what are you really accomplishing with a detox diet? Probably nothing, she concluded. But, if you feel better after detoxing yourself, there's nothing wrong with that at all. Jettisoning bad food and beverage choices is always a good thing.

I have to disagree. It is obvious that Dietitian Joanna McMillan-Price does not know anything about liver detoxification. It's known that some people have under-functioning detox pathways. In these cases toxins build up and cause symptoms.
Many studies are now linking chemical toxins in the body to diabetes and Parkinson's Disease. Rescue workers from the New York 9/11 disaster, who have been ill since, have had their symptoms improved and got off medication with a detox program.
If the liver detoxes how come these chemicals are accumulating in everyone's bodies. I recovered from CFS with detox and will continue to detox from time to time. I know it is necessary and it works.

Sure, getting rid of the bad stuff is good, but what about lemon juice detox diets, or the likes? That's getting rid of both the bad AND the good, and I don't see how that helps anybody.
