The dangers of high fructose corn syrup
Categories: Nutrition & Supplements
We all know sugar is bad for you, and sugar by another name is just as, if not more, harmful to your health. Take high fructose corn syrup, for example. Label-savvy readers will know that this is one of the worst forms of sugar out there, and if you didn't know if already, you do now. HFCS has a proven link to diabetes and that's just one of its harmful side effects.
But it seems hard to avoid. It is in many items in your kitchen right now, even in the ones marked 'all natural.' Which I thinks makes a good case for not relying on convenience items and instead making snack foods yourself. Still, I doubt many people have much time for that so it's important to be educated on what you're putting into your body.

I completely disagree with the statement "it's hard to avoid unless you adhere to a raw food diet". Baloney!
I've been avoiding HFCS for years, just by eating foods made with natural ingredients. You don't even have to eat organic to avoid it. Many stores, such as Whole Foods market carry tons of items that have no HFCS.
The use of evaporated cane juice is becoming extremely common in condiments, cookies and so many other "convenience" type foods. If you just say away from the mega corporations food (Nabisco, General Foods, etc) you'll do FINE.
I've come to expect high quality articles from this site, am disappointed in this very poorly thought out "blurb".

Hi Laurie, Thanks for your feedback. I agree with you -- I avoid hfcs quite effectively and don't have a raw foods diet, but it's easy for me to find alternatives to the major brands out there. Not everyone is so lucky -- people living in small communities don't have as much selection as I learned on a recent out-of-town excursion. When I said it's hard to avoid unless you have a raw foods diet, I meant that to sound sort of tongue-in-cheek but I guess that didn't come through. I've corrected the post to make it more clear.
The basic point I am trying to convey is that it can be avoided if you know what to look for.
