Is overweight healthy?

Posted on Aug 30th 2007 6:55PM by Martha Edwards
A while back, I made a comment that most, but not all, overweight and obese people have unhealthy lifestyles and are at greater risk for health problems later in life. I was quickly told by a reader that this information was false and I should do more research into the matter. I recently came across this post from Diet Blog, in which they review a book by Paul Campos, called The Obesity Myth: Why America's Obsession with Weight is Hazardous to Your Health.

The book argues that overweight people have longer than average lifespans when they lead active and healthy lifestyles. It also argues that it is healthier to remain overweight than yo-yo your body size depending on the latest diet. In addition, our society has a destructive sense of body-image. I haven't read the book (yet) but it sounds intriguing so I might add it to my must-read list.

The book takes on beliefs established and held by doctors and scientists with an array of research, but some are arguing that this research is flawed. What do you think? Is fat healthy? Are we being mislead by current beliefs that it's not?
