25% of kids having trouble falling asleep

Insomnia doesn't just happen to adults. According to sleep experts in the U.S., millions of American children have trouble falling asleep every single night. In addition to insomnia, night awakenings, sleep apnea and sleepwalking are common as well.

What are so many kids having trouble falling asleep? As the population continues to grow, the number will continue to go up (like anything studied), but are things like movies, television, bullying, stress, darkness and other things making these kids scared for some reason? What about multiple night awakenings and even sleepwalking?

In 2004, a study was conducted that found 60 percent of kids had trouble sleeping at least a few times each night, and 74 of parents with children experiencing sleep problems wanted to change something about their child's sleep. But what? Common explanations are sleep apnea and obesity -- both of which can make sleeping troublesome. In fact, it was also found that daytime drowsiness associated with sleep apnea could affect a child's mood, daytime alertness and academics in profound ways. Yikes.
