Oral Allergy Syndrome means less fresh fruits

A relative of mine loves fruit but can't stand bananas because they apparently make his throat itch. Sounds weird, right? I suspect he actually may have "oral allergy syndrome," which is exacerbated by eating certain fruits and vegetables when they are in season. To me, this is a travesty -- eating in-season fruits and veggies (fresh ones) is such a great way to get that quality, daily nutrition.

But now may not be the time for many, as Ragweed and other airborne allergens are in the throes of being popular (August is a particularly bad month). What happens? Ragweed -- which has 35 million U.S. allergy sufferers -- reacts with similar proteins in fresh fruits and veggies. Voila -- allergic reaction to some of the best foods any human can eat.

Check with your doctor to see if this is the problem if those fresh fruits and vegetables cause abnormal reactions like itching and related maladies when eaten.
