'Healthy' fast food is bad for your heart too
Do you think that by having a salad at McDonald's that you're doing something good for your heart? Think again. A study shows that whether you order a healthy meal of a veggie burger, orange juice and a side salad, or whether you go all out on a regular burger, soda and fries, your body's markers for cardiovascular disease are adversely affected. These findings surprised the researchers who discovered them, as they had originally set out to prove that heart-healthy fast food meals were available. The moral of the story isn't that you might as well eat what you want because everything is bad for you anyway; rather, stay away from fast-food joints altogether if you can. I do and it's not that difficult but it takes a bit of planning. What do you think?

i thought it was already known that the salads have just as much suger pumped into them as the soda, and the dressing is loaded with more fat than the burger....i guess not everyone knew that...

I'm going to be honest and admit that I'm tired of all these "news reports" telling you what you can and cannot eat. Let's just say that anything in moderation is fine. I don't think most Americans eat as much fast food as the nutritional food industry would like you to believe. And if you enjoy Big Macs, Whoppers, etc., then having one now-and-then is not a big deal (contrary to what some nutritionists would like you to believe, getting McDonalds once a week or so is not going to give you a heart attack the next morning). And, for the record, it's just as unhealthy to stress out about what you eat as it is to actually eat these things.
So, if you like fast food, pizza, etc., enjoy yourself once in a while. Don't eat it every day or even every other day. But don't be afraid to eat it once in a while if you like it.

People want the EASY way. If it takes work, it's not worth the effort. I am tired of people telling me how "LUCKY" I am because I'm not obese...well, I've worked at it for over 50 years. I eat. I exercise. I eat more. I exercise more. Food is calories. Calories are energy. If you eat and don't put out energy, the calories have no place to go. Everything is fattening if you eat a hog's portion and sit down. I have fat genes...I could go over the top...and sometimes I do...but then I do something about it. A salad at McDonald's won't hurt...but as Martin says, you can't do it every day. Some people CAN eat lots, some can't. We aren't one size fits all. People can have their cake and eat it too...you just have to eat a little at a time. And if you can't handle a little, pass on it.
As for organic food...great tasting vegetables with a cup or two of salad dressing will make you fat. Too much Free Range chicken fried will make you fat. We sit at TVs, and now we sit at computers. We park in the closest spot, never use steps. We expend the least amount of effort and expect the greatest results. It just doesn't work that way...

You know the set up of the meals is all wrong. A salad even a FAST FOOD salad is good for you. It's the dressing that's terrible! Not to mention the croutons and bacon bits people add. And a veggie burger is full of fat and grease. Just because it says "veggie" does not make it healthy. Why not try a dry salad without croutons and bacon bits and yogurt instead? And always it's also the amount you eat just as much as what you eat.

Is there anything left to eat that is safe? It would seem that everything that you put into your mouth has something wrong with it. I think that moderation in most things will suffice.

I agree that it is the "PESTICIDES AND GROWTH HORMONES GENETICALLY ENGINEERED VEGETABLES" that we should be watching out for. If the fat is grown organically, it is actually good for you. quit worrying about the fat and greese. We should also be staying away from all of the corn syrup and the thousands of additives that are allowed in processed foods in America. Quit processing everything to death! Some day there will be a drive-thru that actually has fresh, unprocessed food and it will be a big hit. I would gladly pay twice as much for the convience of that.

My wife is Russian-born and had never eaten fast food. At her behest, I took her to McDonalds recently and she had a Big Mac and fries. When she looked at the receipt for both of us, she commented that for little more we could have eaten lunch at our favorite Thai restuarant . . . and had a healthy meal!
I have been a "gym-rat" and "jock" all my life; martial arts, soccer, tennis, pumping iron and cardio walking for 52 years now. I'm in good shape, but still have to watch what I eat . . . low carb is the only way I maintain . . . and that ain't fast-food!

almost sounds like this is written by Someone from the fast food industry ie: Our big tasty fatty meals are as good as our healthy meals so buy 'em both . Are we to believe " A study " or years of research that says Leafy greens , vitamins , minerals and good carbohydrates are better than fried trans-fat food? I think not . I would hope that organic foods make it into "fast food " places . And Wendys and Mcdonalds choices for Salad dressings are excellent with low fat , no trans fat and many healthy ingredients . READ THE LABELS !!!

This article looks absurd to me. But the comments of other people are bringing something good to other ones.
Moderation in what we eat and what we do is always important, even about fast food.
However, I would like to add a point:
- there is a big difference between an hamburger and a veggie burger. A veggi burger has no meat and does not require to kill an animal to eat. meat brings a lot of toxins to the body; they are a direct or indirect cause of many diseases and unhappynness. these toxins stay in the intestins for days and years.
It is little sad to see so many fast food places in this country, specially when children choose to go there because it is fun to them. But, when they serve veggiburgers and salads, it is a good start and, on the road, it can be very practical and nicer than some restaurants which make me sick because they do not say what is really in a meal.
Sometimes here I miss the good and natural food of old French and of Spain.

Exactly. It seems like everything you eat these days has something wrong with it and needs to be looked at under a microscope. It's too much pressure, it ruins the pleasure you're supposed to have when eating, and it puts too much stress and paranoia upon people (which is just as unhealthy as an all fast food diet).
Everybody with half a brain knows that fast food is unhealthy for you. We don't need to constantly be reminded of it every day when watching the news. Nor do we need people exaggerating and telling us that having one Big Mac for the first time in three years will automatically mean a heart attack the next day. The nutrition industry really needs to step back and stop telling us that everything we put in our mouths is bad for us (if that was the case, then how did we as a civilization survive for all these years? - Heck, how did we live to be as old as we are right now?). May be I'm a little biased because I'm young (24 years old) and at a healthy weight (6'1" and 171 Lbs). But, for the record, this is what I seriously think.
To put it bluntly, the nutrition industry really needs to shut up.

Wow, what great advice Martin! We should all live our lives according to what you're tired of hearing and what won't kill us the next morning. I'm sure the "record" you are keeping about stress versus trans fat is scientifically based too. I am sure you find it easy to spew advice on many subjects. What is your opinion about listening to people who have no clue as to what they are talking about? Should we do that "in moderation"?

Yeah! Lets all switch to organic and avoid any genetically modified organisms. If we do that then of course we will lose weight! There wont be enough food to go around!
Think about it people: growing organically means growing less food. With the population across the world as it is, we have to think about increasing our food growing capabilities. We do this by growing with pesticides (the vegetables you eat, if you rinse them, by the time you eat them are pesticide free) and creating genetically superior produce.

Nathan, sorry for posting such a bitter comment. And I didn't mean for it to be offensive or know-it-allish. But I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that there are too many of these "Health articles" on the news nowadays. And many of them simply reiterate facts that, by now, most people already know. People need to at least be able to relax a little about what they eat, and not necessarily look at everything they put in their mouths under a microscope. Stress IS scientifically proven to cause health problems. And when people are constantly worrying about what they're putting in their stomachs, they become stressed out.
Before you post an angry response to my comments, try to at least understand where I'm coming from. I know I may be wrong about some things, but that doesn't necessarily mean my views should be completely shot down.

Tests should have been run on what they consider a "normal - healthy" meal on the 4th week. And tell us what that meal consists of and the difference in results.
